I always wanted to go into space and I always wanted (sick, I know) to eat astronaut food — the intriguing containers of zero g, lots of plastic. Anyway, now I do. Here’s a quick scan of today’s lunch. There are three expertly applied layers of plastic involved in the packaging of this sushi so nothing’s going anywhere until you’ve ripped, peeled and lifted them away. I like to think of these packages floating in front of hungry astronauts in the cabin of an orbitting spacecraft, but you get shoyu everywhere.
Moving clockwise from the salmon in the top right corner we have the little packet of shoyu, egg, grilled whiting with a sort of barbecue sauce, two shrimp, salmon roe, a bright orange concoction of unidentified roe and a deliciously creamy something, tuna, and two pieces of squid (which were very good).
If you’re into this sort of thing, the scan also works reasonably well as an Mac OS 10.x icon: Edomae Nigiri (20K .gz).

I actually had a similar Bento for lunch that I got over at Uwajimaya the Asian Market in Seattle. Trips there provide just enough Japan to avoid my heart getting sick to return to Tokyo. When I was 16 spent a summer in Tokyo and attended a Japanese High school on a scholarship. Gochisosama deshita!

Thanks for the second (after the maneki neko one) fun Mac icon. BTW, is that sushi bento from Family Mart?

8bitjoystick.com —- They’re good lunches! Add a cup of nama-type instant miso soup and it’s perfect.
Richie —- It is from Family Mart. How did you know?
Nadeem —- I just took the bento, upended it, put it on the scanner, and scanned it at 150 dpi into Photoshop. ;-)

I guess Nadeem’s comment hints at the quality of the scan because I could make out the familiar green Family Mart logo on that pic. :) Looking forward to more or your cool Mac OS X icons in the future.
