Grainy View of Fuji

Went for a walk last weekend and caught a glimpse of Fuji. The day started off cold and perfectly clear but by the time we got to the top of the hill the clouds were louring ominously. The rain held off though.
Couldn’t resist this next photo — I’m stunned at what some people consider adequate footwear for a hike in the hills.

What on earth was she thinking? This was a cold day, and the paths were muddy with churned snow. I doubt they made it very far.

I feel sorry for (assuming) the guy standing next to her. He probably will have to carry her back, listening to her whining that this was all his idea of a day out. :)

Maybe he’s a foot fetishist and he wants to see her with cold slush between her toes. I see they are standing near a bench, so maybe they aren’t planning on going very far anyway. If only Jeremey and friends would skeddaddle, they would get down to the business they came for. ;-)

Japanese people have a laudable desire to get and enjoy the outdoors. Unfortunately, they (especially the younger ones) often hamper this by their bizarre naivete when it comes to proper equipment (unless they’re really into it, in which case they fetishize the whole operation with lederhosen, a quaintly gnarly walking stick with a bell to scare off non-existent bears, etc).
It’s a real problem: the younger generation hasn’t really known physical hardship, and they assume the world isn’t dangerous.

I agree that some Japanese people venture out into the wilderness ill prepaired as I’ve seen similar things, but more often I’d say it’s the opposite. There is a whole sub-culture devoted to walking and the gear they sport is incredible. I’ve noticed that it’s mostly older people into this however.

I have a friend — a middle-aged, single, Japanese lady (and a baseball fanatic like no other). She mentioned last fall that she’d wanted to take up hiking along with some friends, but decided against it because it was going to cost 80,000 Yen to get all the proper gear. Are heels that expensive these days?
When I was in Kyoto last fall, I couldn’t resist shooting this movie of a woman in heels climbing some rock steps at a temple (approx. 2MB QuickTime).
Jeremy, what camera did you use to shoot the photo of Fuji-san? What did you have to do to get the lighting right? I’m constantly struggling to take scenery shots in similarly lighted situations with my digital Canon.

In the middle of my one “big” solo hike across a plateau in the Grand Canyon…. after hours of solitude, I passed a couple walking the other way. He was in jeans and tshirt. She was in shorts and sandals. And where I had a modest backpack of clothing, provisions and water, they carried…. a sixpack of Orange Crush. I’ll never forget it. I felt downright ridiculous.
