Bursting Out All Over
![]()
The plums are nearly done for the year. They came out at the end of February and enjoyed a longer season than usual because it stayed cool this year. Their metabolism slowed to a more leisurely rate (trees such as plums and cherries are deceptively lively beings — don’t let their immobility fool you) and the flowers clung to the branches like pale tourists on a sun deck.
When the time comes for the trees to get it on, reproductively speaking, they don’t hold back. A year’s worth of pent up life-force literally explodes into bloom (and haven’t we all felt this at one time or another). Some flowers, like those above, decide to just have at it right on the trunk. Branches? We don’t need branches, right here’s fine.
Cherries do the same thing but with a gusto that’s almost embarrassing in its voluptuous exhibitionism. They’re the Mae West of trees — brazen, unashamed, irresistable. The cherries are currently sashaying from their dressing rooms to the stage, and ought to hit the spotlight for their big number in a few days. Photographs of the performance will be posted here once they’re in full song.
