McDonalds: More Sugar!

The dateline is April 1, but I’m not sure this is a joke. Adding more sugar to bread is too predictable to be a joke.
McDonald’s may consider changing recipes
AP story on Salon.comApril 1, 2003 | DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — McDonald’s Corp. is contemplating making changes to its sandwiches, including reformulating the hamburger buns and bringing back the Big Mac’s original “special sauce” recipe, according to attendees at a company convention.
The tinkering with the buns is meant to make them toast more easily. More sugar would allow the buns to better caramelize when heated, attendees at Monday’s convention said, recounting reports from top management.
Bring on the sugar so we can boost that caramelization index, I say.

They’ve been adding sugar to their fries for years for the same reason, they brown nicer.

oh yeah, just what we need—more sugar in our diet. as if America wasn’t obese enough.

sam - not just sugar… have you read ‘Fast Food Nation’? if not, you should… I haven’t eaten there since… or any other fast food places - i just hope that there is no ‘sushi prep exposed’ book in the pipeline! Then I’d just go hungry…

sushi?
well sugar is typically added to the rice, along with a gob of msg usually.
not to mention the microbiological hazards of raw fish, and the occasional parasite

Ah, I have read parts of fast food nation, thanks for reminding me. :) Thats part of why I haven’t eaten fast food in a long time.
As far as sushi, sugar is a normal ingredient to the rice, it makes it a bit sweeter, but doesn’t make it glutenous like a more normal ‘sweet rice’. You make a mixture of salt, sugar and rice wine vinegar, and fold it into the rice. You can also buy the mixture premade in bottles, and just add it straight to the rice. Reputable shops shouldn’t use msg, but of course I’m sure some do.

cheers for that BongoMan… What microbiological hazards are they then?
it’s not so much the sugar that concerns me with McD’s, it’s the whole ethics attached to it too…
