NetFuture
For ages I’ve been meaning to post something about the NetFuture newsletter, a remarkable publication edited by Steve Talbott and published by The Nature Institute.
From the web site:
NetFuture is an electronic newsletter with postings every two-to-four weeks or so. It looks beyond the generally recognized “risks” of computer use such as privacy violations, unequal access, censorship, and dangerous computer glitches. It seeks especially to address those deep levels at which we half-consciously shape technology and are shaped by it. What is half-conscious can, after all, be made fully conscious, and we can take responsibility for it.
Recent issues have included articles on food production (the rise and dangers of ‘Big Organic’), conversations with Kevin Kelly, and an absolutely astonishing article by Talbott (“Hold a Blossom to the Light: Amazonian Tribes, Technology, and the Tragedy of Progress” in issue #141) on the work of ethnobotanist Wade Davis (even if you don’t end up subscribing — NetFuture is a free, reader-supported publication — you ought to take a look at this article).
Not just for those of us who are a little skeptical of techno-boosterism, NetFuture is essential reading for anyone who values calm, clear-sighted, and humane analysis of the important technological and industrial issues facing all societies today.
