Linking to the iTunes Music Store

This is pretty interesting. Erik Barzeski was wondering how Bill Bumgarner got links into the iTunes Music Store. Fuse steps in to clarify.

What this means is that you can create links that open in iTunes, loading a page of the store based on search criteria in the link. You can see it in action on NSLog(); where Erik lists the last tracks played in iTunes. Using Kung-Tunes, say, it’s a snap to have the track info point to the store.

Currently useful only for those on OS X, of course, and, if you want to buy a track, those whose credit card bills to a U.S. address. But an interesting taste of things to come perhaps.

i wonder if this is similiar to the way that on many websites they link to a specific page or other sorted/filtered info in the greater amazon.com site. very useful.

in the meantime, i did a search for in-a-gadda-da-vida. and it is already in iTunes store. this is wonderful. this is one of those songs, lone tunes, for which we purchase an entire album. however, get this, they only list the 2min54sec version. so, the long version, for which you would only need to pay 99cents is not listed, nor, for that matter, is that album. here is a case that shows that even if that artist recorded for that label, that they might not make all his material available.

the other thing is that we will now need to remember which artist is recording with what label, since there are only five groups (read = more than five labels) that have gone in on this with steve j. so, for example, The Doors have nothing for sale in the iTunes store yet.

A referral credit system like Amazon would be interesting — say, get ten people to buy a song via a link from your site, and get a free download of a song.

hmm. It works fine on both OSX and Windows XP (with Itunes) installed. It does not work in Safari on OSX tho. Anyone else having this problem?

I agree, i wonder if this is similiar to the way that on many websites they link to a specific page or other sorted/filtered info in the greater amazon.com site. very useful.
