Tokyo’s Getting An Apple Store!
Woo-hoo! According to MacNN, Tokyo is going to be getting the first Apple Store outside the U.S. OK, it’s going to be in Ginza — a little passé — but who’s complaining.
Apple announces Chicago, Tokyo, SF stores
Apple also announced that during the next 12 months it plans to open 20 new Apple retail stores, including its first store in downtown Chicago, on North Michigan Avenue; its first store in San Francisco, in Union Square; and its first retail store outside of the U.S., in Tokyo’s Ginza shopping district. These three locations will be high profile store formats, like Apple’s popular “SoHo” retail store in New York City.

I’m complaining dammit! Getting to Ginza is a pain from here!

I was surprised when I read this today on the Apple news sites. Didn’t they announce this a few months ago? Maybe it was just a leak, but there was a lot of discussion about it on various boards. I also think that they should have gone to a more interesting area, like Omotesando for instance. But still, I can’t wait to check it out.

so — will you be standing in line for the opening?

That’s great. We just got one here in Seattle (OK, in Bellevue — a little passé — but who’s complaining.) and though I’ve not been out there yet, I hear it’s great and plan to do so soon. Now if I can only arrange to get out to the Toyko store…

I’m still complaining that it’s gonna be in Ginza btw (~^)

The passé spot may be necessitated by an unwillingness to mortgage their first-born on rental space… ditto on Bellevue.

That’s very strange, I saw an Apple store in Union Square in May 2002 when I was in San Francisco. In fact I have a picture of it; somebody had thrown a rock (or shot a bullet) at the front window and it had a cool pattern of cracked glass spraying out. And there was a display of Powerbooks in the window so the store must have been open.

Greg, are you sure you’re not confusing with CompUSA on Market, which does have a very prominent Apple window display?
The Apple Store is being built at the corner of Powell and Market, where the old Sephora used to be. Just one block from my office YEAH
