TypePad

I’ve been meaning to mention TypePad since it was announced, just to say congratulations to Mena and Ben and to wish them all the luck in the world (absolutely none of which they need). They just posted screen shots today, so there’s something to see — and it’s beautiful (what did you expect?).

Movable Type’s success is so well-deserved. Every part of the application displays a considerate, switched-on understanding of what people want. It’s not hard to feel the love! If I was a competitor I would have soiled my pants in abject fear a long time ago (maybe some of them are — insert gratuitous link here).

I see no reason why Six Apart won’t bring the same sensibility to TypePad and redfine the space there. Yes, as Jason Kottke points out “[Google] could easily pull a Microsoft to Six Apart’s Netscape,” but TypePad will have the same heart and soul that’s earned MT a beloved place in the daily routine of so many, and heart and soul is a hard thing to just blow out of the water.

The design is quite breathtaking — I’m so glad simplicity is coming back to rule. I hope a other sites take a hint.

So, will you use the service? Even though it looks great, I like being on my own server and managing it myself. I would love the management interface (and would pay for it), but I want it on my server. Oh, and please, please let non-Typepad users have that fantastic looking photo album! Do you think MTPro will have a nice redesign and photo album integration?

HEART AND SOUL DON’T COST $$

I know I’m mean, but I didn’t even bother to look at the screenshots as soon as I read that it was not going to be free as MT was, and even as Blogger…

Supporting people who create tools you love is where the heart and soul part comes in, M. Keep on BlogSpottin’, I’m proud of my MT key.

Supporting is volunteered…paying for is mandatory. As soon as I have the time to learn it I’ll try to get my blog on MT and of ourse support. But I won’t pay for…

Eliot —-

So, will you use the service?

Too early to tell. I’m pretty much set up with MT, so I won’t be moving Antipixel to TypePad, if that’s what you meant. If TypePad rocks the way I think it will, however, I’ll certainly be recommending it to a lot of people who’ve expressed interest in what the software can do but just aren’t comfortable enough with computers to set things up themselves.

Do you think MTPro will have a nice redesign and photo album integration?

I have no idea, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t. As the ‘pro’ version of MT, it’s a sale for Six Apart and I’m sure they’ll be working hard to make sure it’s money well spent.

M —- You may be surprised at the number of people I talk to who are perfectly prepared to pay for something like this. They pay the money because it makes things easier for them; they get something they want without having to go through the hassle of obtaining it all by themselves. A novel concept, it’s called “business.” Perhaps you’ve heard of it?

Dave S. —- Right on! Couldn’t have said it better myself.

The question is not “will it be free” but “will it be competitively priced with other Web hosting services that don’t come with a blogging tool, but do have a lot of acronym crap you will never ever use and don’t even know what it is.” And I think the answer to that will probably be “yes.”

As I understand it, there is a free version in the pipeline as well, but the priority is, rightly so, on offering a fully featured paid for service. To chock that elegant interface up with ads would be a travesty.
