Bush: Made for TV

Booknotes links to a story from The Globe and Mail about a made-for-TV movie called The Big Dance. Covering the events of September 11, 2001, it will apparently feature a steely George Bush ordering his advisors on Airport One to take him back to the White House! As Craig says —

Every day I read the news and wonder if things could possibly get any worse or more bizarre in this country and every day I’m amazed that they do. This is sickeningly perverse.

From the story:

The histrionics, filmed for a two-hour TV movie to be broadcast this September, are as close as you can get to an official White House account of its activities at the outset of the war on terrorism.

Written and produced by a White House insider with the close co-operation of Mr. Bush and his top officials, The Big Dance represents an unusually close merger of Washington’s ambitions and Hollywood’s movie machinery.

Can’t wait to see it.

Isn’t it AirForce One - not Airport One?

Duh … yes, of course it’s not Airport One. I must have been thinking of those Irwin Allen movies.

For what it’s worth, check this essay on Bush’s timeline for 11/9, or this one.

Hopefully, the film will clarify everything (just joking).

It would as comic as Airport One, if not for the sickening, oportunistic and false depictions this “movie” will show. And of course, it will go hand in hand with “Saving Private Lynch”.

Get me out of here…which way to Airport One?

I’m Canadian, I’m paying for this movie. How do you think I feel?!

aside from the fact that this is the most idiotic project i’ve ever heard of, to me the the most repulsive and despicable part is that he actually has the nerve and the audacity to capitalize on the death, pain and suffering of those who either died, were injured or lost loved ones on 9-11.

only word that comes to my mind - tasteless.

if i were the caricaturist and the editor-in-chief for the new york times, the following illustration would accompany an article about this “film”:

scene — dubya (on ground zero, standing on the back of the pickup truck amidst the rubbel and total devastation, wrapping his arm around the elderly fire fighter) speaking into the bullhorn:

“citizens of new york, my fellow americans — i would like to dedicate this moment to those who lost their lives in this appalling act of terrorism, their gieving families and the heros who have worked relentlessly here on ground zero — you’re gonna make me famous and i’m gonna be re-elected, thank you!”

No, his speech should be “I’d like to thank the academy…”

Are we this gullible? Can they really repaint the picture of what he did that day so easily? The scary thing is that if this thing is well done, he is probably going to get re-elected. Not to say that I fear a second term with Bush, but the fact that the American public could be swayed by a movie of the week is pretty scary, and fairly possible.
We can only hope that the essay recommended by Gemp above is made into a documentary (financed by the Democrats?) and aired after the Bush movie. Kinda like the whole Micheal Jackson thing. I think that this essay raised some valid questions, and makes you question who, if anybody, was in charge that morning. After watching the movie, a rebuttal documentary could help to balance out public opinion so that people could better judge for themselves, not just go out and buy “Bush, hero of 9/11” posters for the kids.
But, then again, how many Americans will watch a documentary compared to an action movie?

couldn’t help it - i had to make up a screenshot of the ending of dubya’s masterpiece : )

I see a larger conspiracy here. I think the FCC is about to give large corporations the ability to own every media outlet they can get their hands on in exchange for airing the movie during sweeps on all channels during prime time. And then FOX will run it in a small window while they show re-runs of Iraqi war footage.

“The recession started upon my arrival. It could have been — some say February, some say March, some speculate maybe earlier it started — but nevertheless, it happened as we showed up here. The attacks on our country affected our economy. Corporate scandals affected the confidence of people and therefore affected the economy. My decision on Iraq, this kind of march to war, affected the economy.” —George W. Bush, Meet the Press, Feb. 8, 2004
