Pedestrians walking while not looking where they’re going seems to be a huge problem in this country. And combine that with the huge number of inconsiderate bastards on crowded sidewalks who refuse to give you little bit of space to inch by without smashing your way through pedestrians walking in the opposite direction. And if you overtake one of the salary men clones, you risk getting a hit by a big slimy gob of spit that they are constantly regurgitating.

Major annoyance: People walking in front of you holding their umbrella horizontal. Major-Minor annoyance: Groups walking 3-4 people abreast.

Not just in Japan too. I’m from Brighton, UK, and we get thousands of school-age kids blocking the pavements every summer. Add to that the base-level numbers of total morons getting in the way (like couples holding hands) it’s only a matter of time before someone goes postal on the slack-jawed hordes.

That often “gets at me” also. People all of the sudden striking up a conversation in front of entrances or exits and they make it practically impossible to move around them without being somewhat rude.

Speaking of going ‘postal’, I have often wanted to yell really loud, “MOOOOOOOOOOVE!” (but I don’t dare. I would never want to draw that type of attention to myself)

I remember being in Japan and the 18” rule was not exercised. I guess that is more of a luxury that one comes to know living in less crowded places.

Cyclists not looking before they ‘set off’ is one of my peeves. People on bicycles here seems to think that there is a complete set of rules for them on the road/pavement, which mean that pedestrians, other cyclists, and car drivers will telepathically know where they are planning to go.

Have you ever seen a Japanese cyclist use a hand/arm signal to indicate their intentions? Have you ever seen a Japanese cyclist come hurtling out of a side street straight into moving traffic? Have you ever seen a Japanese cyclist in dark clothes riding at night with no lights on?
