On the train today I looked over at a train on the other tracks and saw yet another guy in a Beckham shirt. Beckham and his wife arrived in Japan yesterday to make more money. Sometimes you just want to say fuck ‘em.
Hundreds of screaming people were waiting at the airport. As they walked out, his wife kept looking at him but he never looked at her. He didn’t exactly look around at the crowd either (Mr. Charisma he ain’t) but sort of stared straight ahead in a way that made me think he may have been watching himself walk out onto an airport concourse so he could fantasize about it later, that reality was the mirror on the bedroom ceiling.
On the television footage I saw there was one moment when his wife stared up at him and I thought I glimpsed on her face just for an instant a look of raw naked resentment that the people weren’t there for her.
She looks like Michael Jackson, by the way. Here’s a snippet from the front page of this morning’s Asahi Shinbun. Beckham-sama, Welcome…

I never even heard of him before that movie “Bend it like Beckham” came out.

I can’t think of a better place for them to be (distance-wise) from the UK… Sorry Jeremy!
Actually, he seems like an alright bloke ‘sometimes’, but the whole celebrity thing is total bullshit. How on earth can you become famous for SHOPPING!!!
Still, I’m coming out to Tokyo soon so I guess I should get used to seeing them even more than you do over here… ack!

I think they are good. They give a lot to chartity, they are pretty much down to earth, they stick to their roots. I agree that Victoria did look like she envied her husbands popularity but she will also be very proud as she has infact said.
I have met David Beckham at Manchester United’s old training ground “The cliff” when he was just breaking into United’s first team. I can’t understand why some people don’t like them, there are not like J-LO or Madonna who have big groups of people to look after their every need and they don’t give reporters or fans a hard time for taking their picture.
Personally I wish them well, now that they are moving to Spain and hope that someday people will give them a break.

Anyone remember when footballers were famous for playing football instead of their hair? No, me neither.
Posted by Blake 2003.06.20, 10:17
She looks like Michael Jackson. That’s awesome.

You Suck — Perhaps I should do a one-off shirt for you: Suckham.

Glad they’re moving to spain. Hopefully some of the media guys move with them.
Beckham is quite an interesting person, but imho Victoria did a more interesting change in the last couple years. From popstar to loving mummy to husband-envy wife. I’d be interested what she thinks of his hairstyle…

I haven’t had a close look at them and all this, but there was some snippet of them in hollywood for something a week or two back . She was doing the talking and he just had his head down a bit. The feeling that I got was that the celeb thing wasn’t his scene at all and that he’s really just a soccer player who wants to play soccer.

I think it will be most interesting to see if Beckham improves Real Madrid’s standings or hurts the team over all with the publicity. The news coverage was definitely a bane for Man U but then again he was the only big name on the team.

You’re missing the most important point of this visit: within a few weeks, hundreds of Japanese guys are gonna be sporting the ‘samurai’ look, thanks to Beckham’s latest hairstyle.
I almost wish he’d shave the outline of a penis on his head next time just to see if everyone out here would copy it. :)

What exactly is Beckham famous for? He is not the best footballer, not the highest paid, not the most attractive, not the most original and by far not the most interesting.
Why is he famous? Why are his children name Romeo and Brooklyn? Why is his wife two-dimensional?
WHY IS HE FAMOUS?!

I would also like to know what makes this person famous.
She does NOT look like Michael Jackson. C’mon fellow posters… I know you can tell the difference.

I think his fame is a combination of circumstance and well managed publicity by his sponcer’s and his wife’s agents. He caused a storm in 1998 by being sent off in the World Cup which a lot of people credited with ruining England’s chances of progression, he was made public enemy number one and people even “hanged” models of him from lamp posts.
However just a year later he helped Man Utd do an incredible “Treble” of the Premiership, the FA Cup and The Champions League.
Of course being maried to a former spice girl gives him added fame and popularity in some parts, he is also captain of England, he did play for Manchester United the club with the biggest and arguably most fanatical following in the world.
He has a film named after him “Bend it like Beckham”
He is sponcered by Vodaphone, Bryle Cream, Marks and Spencer, Police, Adidas and is constantly in glossy magazines for sport and popular culture.
These are just some of the things I can think of that make him so famous in most countries around the world.

Eep…ok well Beckham is cute in the vodafone ads…but in that pic he’s just…unwashed and feral…u can wear all the D&G, Armani and Versace you want but if you’re a bum…it’s not happening…I used to think Victoria was pretty until she looked like someone pinched her face and didn’t look go…heheh now she looks like a barbie doll…not quite like michael jackson tho….why do so many japanese these days want to be american or white? don’t they understand how many people would kill to look like or be like them??? argh crazy nihonjin….I’ll never understand!! (sorry tis a bit longer than 2c)

I guess that’s what happens when you don’t watch TV for 10 years… Who is this guy?
Posted by kevin 2003.06.24, 01:30
I have no idea why you all know so much about him. I have heard the name during the world cup last year… mostly because of his hair I thought. I had no idea people were still into that stuff a year later.
As for why he is so famous, I would guess it’s because people complain that he is famous. I know 100 times more about him now after reading this post and comments than I did just 10 minutes ago!
But then again, I’m from USA…
Posted by Paul Michael Smith 2003.06.24, 05:20
I know I am probably coming across as his biggest fan to you guys but this guy is the equivalent of the USA’s biggest sports star times four.
I know a lot about Beckham because for one I live in Manchester UK the home of Manchester United and secondly because he is in fact a brilliant athlete, the stuff about his hair and all that bull is down to the newspaper’s and magazines who stand to sell more than double their usual amount of papers if they mention his name on the front page because he so popular, so it is obvious that they are going to make a big deal about something as trivial as a hair cut because it sells magazines and papers.
At the risk of some angry replies I am going to say this; I do get annoyed about the Americans sometimes because you have this mentality that if someone has not made it in a America then they are not worth the adulation. The same goes for music and movie stars too, not just for sport.
Your sports in my opinion don’t even come close to FOOTBALL! Not soccer FOOTBALL. Your American Football is more like a soft arse version of Rugby. You don’t even use your feet very often in American Football yet you still insist that it is called FOOTBALL and that real football is called Soccer.
The World Series is a joke because there are only you in it! I kind of like Basket ball sometimes because it something that is obvious takes a lot of skill and control but Baseball is something I will never understand the attraction too, a load of sometimes over weight men in pyjamas throwing a tiny ball at each other and running around in circles, I’m sure there is a lot more too it than that but watching it for more than five minutes gives me to urge to change the channel and not continue watching to find out the inner workings and rules of the game. Maybe that is just me because we have Cricket and personally that does not interest me either although It is a lot more interesting that Baseball.
Sorry for the rant but that needed to be said. ;-) I know almost every sport watching Brit that thinks the same.

they’re so cool they have a rob halford escort…
Posted by ed 2003.06.27, 22:49
Actually not every sports watching brit thinks the same… (and no i’m not a man city fan ;0)

Watched Beckham and his missus on Parkinson last month and my opinion of then both changed. Except Parky, who just seems to go through the motions of the celebrity interview these days. ‘Becks comes across as what many quiet, suburban English lads dream of - wealth, gorgeous ‘bird’ and a talent with the ball. Simple equation really. Nice lad, just needs a decent haircut. Unfortunately, the hole in the English spirit and the clever-chop sub-editors at Mr Murdoch’s Sun have combined to produce this sort of hysteria which our American cousins have no real need to notice. Who needs a braided ‘metrosexual’ when you’ve got a stream of Michael Jordans on tap? OK, gridiron sucks - all that latex knickers and shoulder pads is more like Patsy from Abfab, and lets not start on what a good All Blacks (rugby union, Kiwi style) line-up could do to a bunch of padded-up Seppos. But soccer is marketing and marketing is the new God. When that great Australian philanthropist Rupert Murdoch made a stab at buying Man United I heard the English Premier (soccer) League was worth more than the US baseball, basketball and gridiron leagues COMBINED. Perhaps that’s a bit of a myth, but when you consider football is the world’s number one game, and the Premier league the most watched yearly competition, then statement starts to make a bit of sense. I still can’t play for quids though….

And another thing: Is that former Australian Labor Party Prime Minister Paul Keating next to Posh, or what? Bald as a coot to! Hells bells, and I though he would spend his time just polishing his clocks (and that’s not a euphamism).
