Linux Overtakes Macintosh, Film at 11

Always fun to read a good writer in full curmudge: John Gruber on Paul Boutin’s silly article.
Zingers abound:
Wow, that’s a lot of crap for one sentence.
…
Trying to sell QuarkXPress or Photoshop to Linux users would be like trying to sell Cadillacs to farmers in China.

Now that’s a good debunking if ever I’ve seen one.
As soon as I saw slate was a subdomain of MSN, I knew the article would be absolute bollocks right from the first word and John Gruber proved me right.
I’ve had MS users slating the new G5 and panther, even before it’s released and 99% of those MS users have never laid hands on a Mac in their life. In this instance, all I can say is ignorance is bliss.

Linux a threat to Mac? I don’t think so. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big Linux enthusiast, but that doesn’t diminish the esteem I have for Mac OS X.

Linux is NOT a threat to Mac OS X,. Most of the GNU apps are ported and work is well under way with many other open source apps. Windows, however is fair game. It’s going to interesting to see what happens.

The article may be bollocks but so’s the debunking. It’s hardly fair to say that all Linux desktops are low-end Walmart 400 MHz pieces of refuse, and he seems entirely unaware that it’s sane and common practice for KDE and Gnome to coexist on any one system. KDE and Gnome are not not not two separate development platforms, they’re two different development frameworks that run on the same platform.

I’m declaring desktop Linux DOA. Not that geeks around the world won’t continue to use it that way, but it’s just not a good tool for that job.
Linux is great for servers, but as far as the desktop goes, Apple and Windows have that covered.
