Map Week #4 - Tuftian Hakone

Escaping flatland (in the grand tradition of Japanese aerial maps)
This example’s a bit of a throwaway but now that we’ve gone and mentioned Tufte we may as well include it. Here’s Hakone as it appears on the 3-pane gatefold brochure for Tenzan, a wonderful day-visit only hot spring near Hakone Yumoto. Tenzan has a big retro theme going, but so tastefully done it’s just superb. The background music is entrancing (shakuhachi and water dripping on various surfaces).
On pages 12–13 of his first book Tufte shows a map of Ise Shrine drawn in a similar perspective. There’s a less obvious example on page 106, also. It’s a specialty in these parts.

Beautiful! I was enchanted by Tufte’s Japanese map examples, especially since I read my first Tufte after I’d been to Japan once. Now I have them all and I still love them and I actually understand the Japanese example thoroughly! Maybe I’ll take one of the books to bed with me tonight.
