Sea of Fire

Who knows what the hell to believe these days when it comes to U.S. intelligence reports, but Bloomberg, picking up on a story in the Nikkei, reports that North Korea apparently has 200 missiles set to strike Japan. I thought the cold war was supposed to be over, but Kim’s shoe-thumpingly retro sea-of-fire rhetoric and general inscrutability bumping up aginst the untrustworthiness and beady-eyed, trigger-happy incompetence of the Bush regime could make for some interesting scenarios.
The U.S. told Japan that North Korea had set on standby 200 Nodong medium-range ballistic missiles for launch to strike Japan, the Nihon Keizai newspaper said, citing unnamed Japanese foreign ministry officials.
I believe our official response is supposed to be “Bring ‘em on!”

Stupid official responses - this isn’t a Bruce Willis movie I hope they realize.

I’ve been convinced for more than a few years now that I will see a nuclear detonation within my lifetime (I’m 33); I’d always figured Jerusalem (I think either side could come up with a reason to do it).
but east asia —- for sheer grass-eating lunacy —- is fast over-taking Jerusalem or any other south-west asian location; also at the top of that list is chechnya and the stunning number of women suicide bombers there. also Pakistan and/or Afghanistan: forgotten, unstable, teetering on Somalia-like anarchy, but with built and tested nuclear weaponry, though Pakistan’s official assurances are that nothing’s deployed and it’s “all good” and accounted for.
then there’s always the random container ship coming into new york harbor, but I’d put that in the lower third of my top ten of likely scenarios, for now anyway (we are just about due for a major attack from al qaeda, they favor 18-24 month cycles).
