Meowlingual

Well, it had to happen.

Japan invents ‘cat chat’ device
BBC

Ever wondered what your cat is trying to tell you? A Japanese company hopes to solve this conundrum with a new toy that seeks to interpret your pet’s meows.

Following Takeda Co’s successful launch of Bowlingual - which does the same thing for dogs - Meowlingual is due to be rolled out in November.

The cat version is cheaper than the dog version — probably because it only contains two phrases: “feed me” and “go away.”

In my humble opinion, simply ridiculous… Funny, but nonetheless ridiculous!

That I could believe. Having lived in a household with three cats, I can honestly state that cats don’t give a crap about us, just about being fed, and being left alone. You know why there aren’t more statements? Because cats only ask to be fed and left alone. Dogs on the other hand, I have a feeling they talk a lot. But, like an eight-year-old with no point to the conversation, it’s a lot of babbling.

Actually my cat (who now in lives in Australia) used to talk a lot. When I would come home and he would jump in thru the window he would meow something suspiciously-sounding like “Hello. Good day. Feed me and pay me attention”.

Honest.

Now he talks to me on the phone.

He also likes to play Fetch.

Our herd members talk a lot also, both to us and each other. A lot of it does sound similar, but each cat seems to have a unique voice and a somewhat different vocabulary. On the other hand I had to leave one cat in carrier in the vets lobby so I could run out for my non-sunglasses. When I returned the cat was still making “pitiful riding in car” noises and the vet folks were talking amongst themselves about how all cats say the same thing with the same tone and facial expression. And they wondered what it meant! Since that sound starts as soon as the car starts it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the destination. And it’s much different than the little miaow/chirp I get when the littlest one walks the length of me after I’ve gone to bed. He seems to do this each night, as though to make sure I’m finally in bed and he is either wishing me a good catnap or announcing to the others that it’s ok to get into trouble….

pixel has many words and phrases in his kitty vocabulary.

“Feed me.” “NOW” “Empty my litter tray, biatch!” “Pet me. Im cute.” “Dont even think about it.” “Brush! Brush! Dont stop!” “Im going to bite you and there is nothing you can do about it.” “Hello. Nice of you to return home. I need clean water and that crap you left in my bowl is not up to par.”

“I’m scared” “open the door for me!” “stop” “I’m hungry!” etc…

Hey guys, what do you say we go cruising for some humie?

It just occurs to me, if cats have language do they also have accents, slang, speech impediments, etc.?

depends on the breed. some breeds aren’t known for their intelligence or vocal ability. Siamese are a very vocal breed. They listen too. Ask any siamese breeder or check the websites. They are intelligent animals and very communicative. Our Abyssinian on the other hand doesn’t vocalize much and doesn’t seem to listen/comprehend much of anything.

Maybe someone should make mod chips for different breeds.

I am the owner of a Japanese version Meowlingual. It can be programmed to translate the vocalizations of 14 different breeds of Cats. I have 3 cats. My Turkish Angora is the most vocal of the group. I have had 8 different translations for his various vocalizations. He's my sweet talker. The Meowlingual also has a cat face that expresses the cats mood visually along with the translation. If you what to know what it says - buy one. The english version I'm told will be out later this year.

Do cats from different countries meow differently? I heard that cats didn’t really meow in the wild and just meow to mimic the human voice.

Also. Where can I purchase this?

Living with five cats for a long time, with one of the cats talking to me for sooo long, I really can’t wait until the Meowlingual comes out. I’ll finally be able to respond to my cats the RIGHT way.

I get NG Kids in the mail sometimes, and this month’s issue has a picture and paragraph about the Meowlingual. It looks realy cute. Just as cute as cats!
