Big Weekend

Dancers wait to begin the Awa Odori
A mixed bag of a weekend, mostly good but the souvenir I’m left with is a sore throat that seems to want to head south into my lungs.
On Friday I swam the 400m freestyle in the Japan Masters Championships (I beat my entry time by 12 seconds rather the 15 I was aiming for but did not swim a good race at all) and from there went to the opening party of an Irish bar in Ginza (where a Cartier store was also opening — limos were pulling up to the curb disgorging celebrities like mouths disgorge mussels when the E. coli kicks in. A spasm would run through the crowd as the car pulled up and then — plop — there’d be another one sliding into the gilded toilet of the store). A grotesque display of overindulgence (the Cartier store, not the Irish bar which was perfectly fine).
Saturday and Sunday we had the local festival which is always fun. The rain held off but my fever didn’t and I watched it all through that dopey haze that fevers bring.

Seemed like you had one of those mandatory burn-out weekends in mid summer. Going on a swim race and then to an irish pub, on to a festival… and you’re surprised about your cold? My congratulations on surviving the weekend, I’d say.
I tend to get myself involved in such all-you-can-enjoy weekends every now and then too, only reminding myself that less is (always?) more… it doesn’t seem to prevent me much from doing the same thing again though…
Cheers,
- Sebastian

That is a great picture. There is only one person kind-of-sorta looking at you while all of the activity and attention is elsewhere.
Even though you seemed to have caught a cold, I bet you had fun.
Best,
Ashley

What team do you swim on for Japan Masters Swimming meets? I flew in from the U.S. on Friday and swam at Tatsumi in a jetlagged state on Saturday and Sunday for Tokyo Swimming Center. I admire anyone who can even meet the qualifying time for a 400-meter event. :-)
