Cicadas (Fast)

The cicadas here seem to have two speeds: a rapid, regular pulsing several times per second and then the longer, classic-sound-of-summer crescendo pulsing. Here are 30 seconds of fast cicada pulsing outside my window just now.

Great sounding recording. What did you use to record it?

Most of the recordings I make are of sounds heard through the window next to my desk, so they’re recorded straight into the Mac via an old PlainTalk microphone (surprisingly good mics for the purpose).
The sound goes straight into Sound Studio where I can edit it and apply any effects (if necessary). The resulting AIFF file is converted into mp3 in iTunes.
A considerably less than fancy set-up, but it does the job.

I’ve made release-purpose music recordings with less. But they always suck, so…

We have a power socket in our house that’s hooked up to a lightswitch on our wall - it’s a bit non-standard and apparently it breaks European electricity regulations, but I decided it would be interesting to hook up an amplifier to it. Playing into the amplifier is a minidisc on loop mode with various ambient sound effects. Currently, early morning birdsong is playing. Although if you get bored of the birdsong, you can just turn it off by pressing the birdswitch.
I’d like to use this sound of cicadas and loop that onto the minidisc, and then in the evening we could have a cicadaswitch. I hope that’s okay with you. It’s a very pleasant sound. You’d be most welcome to drop by and try out the cicadaswitch for yourself.
