Sanitized for Our Protection

Charles Taylor in Salon on how the new Bertolucci movie will be sanitised for American audiences:
Adults have to start guarding the culture that is meant for us with the same protectiveness parents show toward their children.
A damn fine rant indeed.

Recently I posted a similar rant (tho not as literate) on the R-rating that the MPAA gave to “I Capture the Castle”. The Masterpiece Theater style interpretation of the classic girl’s coming-of-age story will go pretty much unseen by American girls. The intended audience can’t get in to see it without their parents, nor rent it at the video store. Compared with a slew of ugly movies that came out this summer rated PG-13, it’s just weird.

One of the strange things Taylor points out in his article is that the Bertolucci film will likely be released on DVD unrated after its theatrical release:
And there is another irony. If “The Dreamers” is released here in a cut version, it’s a sure bet that, a few months later, the unrated version will be released on DVD. (This happened recently with Chen Kaige’s erotic thriller “Killing Me Softly.” MGM/UA did not release it in the theaters, but released it in unrated and R-rated versions on DVD.) Kids who can’t get into R-rated movies in theaters can see them months later on HBO or, even sooner, can walk into media megastores and see them playing on in-store monitors when they are released on DVD.I don’t get it.
