The Word for Word

The kanji for “word” — gen — carved into rock above Jinata onsen.

Curious how the red lichen seems to prefer to live inside the carving rather than on the surface of the rock.

I wonder if the green lichen hasn’t changed the pH of the rock’s crust over the millenia… the carving just allowing the red lichen to get a foothold in the untrammeled sub-strata.

I’ve noticed a similar thing on the granite around here, although I haven’t seen any red lichen here, Compared to the lichen that grows on the granite faces, there is a disdictively different lichen that grows in the crevises and cracks. I have always loved the stone carvings in Japan, please do keep them coming.

I love the picture. Who knows maybe some guy with an artistic eye for things runs around seeding carving with red lichen spores.
