Four visitors to Opera City.
On Saturday the Japan Photographers mailing list organised a field trip to Komazawa Park. For some reason the day did not come together for me at all and I did not take a single photograph I’d be prepared to show anyone. Not a single one! All absolute crap.
Sometimes you have good days and sometimes you have bad days — and now I know how bad they can get.

That’s a great shot …I’m curious, if you used a digital camera, how you corrected for barrel distortion (if any)?

i tell ya, it’s a struggle. earlier this year a pal and i went up one of the most famous trails in the worls, the berg lake trail, up the side of mt. robson in the canadian rockies. last year, i took fifty pictures and every one turned out. this year, not a one. dammit. when the landscape presents itself like that, it’s our job to capture it. and sometimes, we can’t even do that. how heartbreaking it is when something so striking gets lost. i feel for you man, but keep shooting. i look forward to your photographs, whether or not you feel like sharing.

Erik —- That shot was taken with a Contax T2. These have a 38mm lens so there’s virtually no distortion (the CoolPix is another story entirely). The picture wasn’t corrected for barrelling at all (there was none), just for slight over-exposure on the left where the light comes in.
Incidentally, Vincent Brockaert has an article on correcting for barrel distortion on DPReview. In his review of Photoshop CS he mentions the absence of a distortion correction tool in the version (which would have been a nice addition).
chris —- I feel your pain, believe me. Although Komazawa Park isn’t exactly the Canadian Rockies. Ouch. It’s strange, though; I started the day really looking forward to the shoot and then, upon arrival, immediately realised it wasn’t going to happen for me. Found myself wishing I’d brought the SLR instead of the digital (I’d decided to not lug gear and keep it point-and-shoot simple to see what would happen).
I think if you get one or two good pictures off a roll you’re doing well, but this was absolute zero!

They can’t be that bad… Well, just glad you showed up, so let’s count that as your one “get out of jail free” card. But next time…
;-p

That’s the nice thing about a digital camera, though.
No wasted film! So you should be able (assuming you have the memory cards for it) take pictures all day, thus improving your chances of getting a few really good ones.

We have all been there. No, not to the park, but the inability to make images when they present themselves to us. Take heart in this - the park will always be there (well, “always” is a relative term) and you can give it another shot, ahem … try.
Love your your site.
Seshu (apparently it means Serene Autumn in Japanese)
