Ferry returning from Kozushima
My grandmother had a framed black and white photograph on her wall of the ship on which she and my grandfather sailed to Vietnam in the ’50s. It was so handsome, this ship, the hull jet black in the photograph, the superstructure gleaming white. It had a no-bullshit utilitarian-ness to it, cranes fore and aft. It wasn’t a cruise liner but a ship you used to get somewhere, a working ship.
It became something of an iconic image to me, and I’ve been trying to take my own photograph of that ship for 20 years. This is not that photograph (not that I don’t have considerable affection for the ship shown here), just a not-so-bad example of how the grain in Fuji NeoPan likes to come out and play. You really need to see it larger (116K JPEG).

Have you tried searching for anyone who might have worked for the shipping line on the Internet?
Who knows, you may get lucky!

I haven’t shot with film since I foolishly stuck my finger through the shutter of my camera a few years ago, ruining the camera in the process. I’ve been all digital since then.
But this shot has reminded me of my love for grainy B&W photos. I think it’s about time I sent that camera off for repair.

What ASA was that shot at?

400 ASA Fuji NeoPan Presto (which I think is called NeoPan Professional in America). I can’t remember the exposure details, sorry.

I used to live on Kozu (JET Program). The ship shown is is most likely the Camelia Maru. I know it’s not what youre looking for, but thought you might like to know.
