Professional Lego Builder Wanted

Jacob McKee, Community Developer Manager for Lego, wrote to me to let me know about something very amazing indeed:

I’m trying to get the word out about something really cool for LEGO fans, the LEGO Master Builder Search. The LEGOLAND park in California is holding tryouts to fill an open Master Builder position. Pretty cool stuff, and I’m trying to make sure it is successful.

Talk about a dream job! The successful applicant gets to design and build stuff with Lego full-time. And gets paid — we’re talking professional Lego builder.

There are 6 master builders working at LEGOLAND in California and they’re looking for a seventh. Not sure if you have to be a resident of the US to apply, but that’s where the search is taking place. This is going to be something to watch. Best of luck, Jacob: I’m sure it will be more successful than you ever dreamed.

…Wow…Isn’t this just so cool. No other way to put it.

Now I’n NOT a Lego fan - but I can see how fantastic this would be…(Being Brit brought up in the 1960s I was actually a Meccanno fan!)…

But the whole idea of being able to imerse your self in a job that would be like doing your hobby for money just so appeals to me!

Like someone paying me to drink beer or watch movies all day…(sorry my choices aren’t as creative!)

Top post!

Thanks Jeremy!

I’ve gone ahead and sent the post along to a woman of extraordinary talent and passion… hopefully she takes a swing at the dream job.

I would have posted a link to her work… but she’s gotten plenty of flak from folks that just don’t get her passion.

They could make a really bad reality show from this. “Search for a Lego Superstar”… or something to that effect.

Better than 90% of the other offerings on the television these days.

Oh they already are, of sorts.

Should have read the article before posting.

Yeah, the job itself sounds pretty amazing. But the selection process is pretty lame. As usual, something that’s supposed to be about creativity and fun turns into a competition with emphasis on efficiency under pressure… Yuk.

…What happens if a Lego builder snaps under pressure?

Hmmmm…

The color-blind need not apply.

The pressure to perform to a standard whereby die hard LEGO fans wouldn’t be dissapointed would be too much.

Click HERE to see the scorpion I built to qualify as a finalist on the final leg of the nine-city, nationwide search for the next LEGO Master Model Builder for Legoland in Carlsbad, California.

Competitors were given 45 minutes and 2,000 assorted basic bricks, then the theme, in my case animals. This is what I was able to come up with in the time alotted. We were told not to worry too much about color, they were looking at form and technique, among other things, when judging.

It was a pretty crazy event, news photographers filled the room, camera men (and women) roamed table to table getting pictures/footage of the competitors/applicants working their pile of bricks into something…

I am so excited and in true disbelief that I, and 26 other hopefuls, actually will get to participate in the final build-off on January 22-23 in Legoland (25 minutes from my house) for the dream job of a lifetime. You can see everybody’s qualifying models HERE at the Official LEGO Master Model Builder Website.
