Isn’t this enticing? Ah yes, pachinko! Where the fun never ends.

Wow. I’ve seen maybe five pachinko machines over the course of my whole life, most of them antiques, one of which had been restored and was operational. I’ve always found them very enticing, actually, and hope to own one of my own some day.

But I never ever knew that places like you’ve photographed here existed. I didn’t know that other people in the world feel the way that I do about pachinko.

And who’s that attractive lady, beckoning me to rattle the pins?

Anyway, thanks for continuing to expand my cultural horizons (and I also love your Japanese architecture photos).

“And who’s that attractive lady, beckoning me to rattle the pins?”

Shes the villainess Doronjo from the Time Bokan series.

I was watch some obscure digital channel the other night and they had a very old ‘Clive Anderson’* where he visits Japan…

His complete bewilderment about pachinko is obvious - and hilarious.

What I didn’t know is that it’s not a game of skill - like an up-right pinball - but rather a sheer game of chance. And that there isn’t actually very much to do except feed the little silver balls in the top, and see whether they come out the bottom!

It’s not the kind of high-brow, zen activity that I normally associate with the Japanese - or is it (in a zen way!)…

and never begins…..

I think you mean Clive James, not Clive Anderson. I always get the names mixed up myself. James is one of Australia’s better exports to British culture (besides Rolf Harris, of course). I have a collection of his memoirs that I really should start reading soon.

(Just for the record, I’m Irish, living in Ireland, but British culture is for all intents and purposes unavoidable here.)
