I suppose today there should also be a big pumpkin. We don’t celebrate Hallowe’en in Australia, and I’ve always been more of a Walpurgisnacht sort myself, but anyway — Happy Hallowe’en, everyone. May all your nightmares come true.

You can spell it without the apostrophe, but it’s not as good —- like a witch without her pointy hat or a vampire with false teeth. The Shorter OED gives the apostrophe’d spelling first, noting that it can also be spelled without. The word is a contraction of All Hallow Even, so that apostrophe is all we have to remember the dropped v and the subsequently elided syllable (or is it a dipthong? I never know).
It’s much better to contract it and say “—-we’en” of course because then we infuse the word with a sound like the wind screeching through gnarled trees or draughty abandoned houses, but we need to keep that apostrophe because the word, like the wind, requires an unseen presence to chill us just a little more.
