Woodpile

It’s starting to get cool here. I wish we had an open fireplace, or even a wood-burning stove like I had in Australia (makes the tastiest bread, and you can cook chapatis on the hob).
When I was a kid, we had a wood-burning hot water system for years. I remember chopping a lot of wood, mostly jarrah, a wonderful native wood often used for floorboards (it’s a deep red and there’s really no other floor you’d want apart from tatami or maybe slate in the kitchen). Jarrah is also favoured for fireplaces because it burns away to nothing — very little ash to clean up later.

Reminds me of my childhood winters, when we used to eat potatoes roasted on the fireplace.
