Take Control of Panther

Haven’t installed Panther yet and wondering about the best way to go about it? Or you’ve installed it just fine and now it’s time to figure out all the groovy things you can do to customise it? You may be interested in the first two titles of the Take Control series from long-time Macintosh publishers TidBITS.

Joe Kissell has written “Take Control of Upgrading to Panther” and Matt Neuberg has written “Take Control of Customising Panther,” which I bought and downloaded last night. Each book is $5 and comes in PDF format so you there’s no extra and potentially funky software to install or anything like that. I’ve only glanced through TCoC so far, but it looks like it’ll be five bucks well spent.

now that 10.3.1 is out, all is safe. Panther is amazing. I installed on 3 machines: -iBook -Cube -Powerbook On iBook I did the upgrade install. On the other two I did the archive install. There are slight differences is where files are located later between the two: upgrade install leaving files where they were located in Jaguar; and archive install placing them in Pather locations. I recommend either the archive install, or, if you have time and good back up space, then the clean install. Happy expose! Thnx

I did the clean install. I also installed all the X tools too, not that I will use them, but they will be nice to have should I want to. I did not install all the language packs, just English and Japanese.

So far Mail.app is barfing on me occasionally with the junk mail/spam catcher feature. That’s about it.

I hesitantly ran an upgrade install on my PowerBook. I did a backup first of course. The install went just fine. I have some issues with Panther. Mail being one of them as it has barfed on me as well.

I have found no problems with the upgrade that I would attribute directly to the upgrade, for what it’s worth…

I got Panther the night it got out and installed it right away. I did a complete new install on my TiBook and iMac. After putting the backups (prefs…) back on things were just as before. I had absolutely no problems with the Panther upgrade. With the exception of Dave which I use to access the server and printers at work (but the guys at Thursbry solved the problem within a coupld of days). I have had absolutely no problem with Mail. But I have to say everything is a bit faster and I actually like the new threaded message function in mail as well as Expose…

I did the upgrade because somehow or other I just missed all the other options. Yeah, I know - pretty darn dumb! But I’ve not had any problems. I’ve recently done a pretty thorough back up (on DVD’s no less!) so I’m thinking about doing a complete reinstall in my next “free time” PS - was just reading a support article about problems installing things with VISE installers while connected to things like iDisk:

Just an FYI

Where are the good times when tibbits were offered for free? (shakes his head… cchk, chk, chk, chk…)

cchk, chk, chk. Shake your hear a little more.

Seems that you don’t follow Tidbits these days. In ADDITION to the FREE information they are experimenting with small “How To” eBooks, that otherwise wouldn’t be published, for people who are interested.
