Stools in an old public bathhouse.

I almost never take vertical pictures, but I’ve been following Kristen’s creativity series and have been trying to see if a 90° shift in perspective doesn’t make a difference.

I take such refuge in routine that these little changes really do have a disproportionate impact — I’m a cheap date, creativity-wise. Yet I often find that having a well-worn routine frees my mind to think about other things while the rest of me goes through the motions. I’m probably just kidding myself, and anyway, all things in moderation. A good whack upside the head, proverbially speaking, generally does wonders.

Jeremy,

There’s a good design book entitled The Art of Looking Sideways you may find helpful in this regard.

You know, I’d say you had a problem with your routine if your results were less than compelling. It’s “a rut” if your results aren’t panning out. It’s called “technique” if your results work well.

You, my friend, are all about technique.

Wow, I really like this photo. It has real sense of place and simplicity. What kind of camera do you use?

The geometic shape of the windows, stools (at both angles) and floor tiles relate to each other beautifully. I wouldn’t use the words “cheap date” to describe any of your work!

this photo is such a subtle and yet intricate image.

as usual, your composition and skill at choosing subject matter are superb.

there is no way you are in a routine, its called a creative niche.

confess jeremy - you were just fishing for compliments

> confess jeremy - you were just fishing for compliments

It certainly did come off like that, didn’t it. But I wasn’t —- really! I’ve had more positive feedback lately than is probably good for a person, and you can consider me well and truly flattered, encouraged, and gratified.

What I was trying to say was that it doesn’t take much to get me interested. I spent an hour the other day making pictures of a rock on a table and I was as happy as a pig in mud. Like I say, cheap date!

As always your composition is very arty and the subject stands out.

What equipment are you using, especially what camera?

I have not enjoyed your vertical photos as much as your horisontal ones but for this subject it works very well.

NICE WORK!

David —- Everything posted recently is taken with a Nikon D1X and an f2.8 28-70mm AF-S zoom. NEF files from the camera are opened with Nikon’s software before being brought into Photoshop. (I’ve noticed they’re noticeably sharper when opened with Nikon Capture rather than Photoshop 7 using the Nikon RAW plug-in —- not that it matters for the size I post here. I don’t have the Adobe Camera RAW plug-in or Photoshop CS to compare.)

uh oh, didn’t read your reply until today - it’s been a busy month so far - but nevertheless:

no reason to explain and/or apologize - at all. no need to be (too) modest either - your photos are wonderful.

you have every reason to be proud of your work - as long as the effective diameter of your head remains lower than or equal to the width of the door frames in your house - otherwise you’re going to be stuck … metaphorically speaking.

: )
