Thom Hogan’s 2004 Predictions
Comments: 2
Photo maven Thom Hogan’s predictions for 2004 contain some striking ideas, but what’s really interesting is the preamble in which he recaps some developments from this year. A couple of highlights:
Nikon and Canon are now predominately digital photography companies, as more than 80% of their unit and sales volume for cameras is being generated by digital bodies, both compact and DSLR […] Nikon’s 35mm SLR sales shrunk by 25% in 2003, and the pace is accelerating. Amazingly, despite that big drop in 35mm SLR sales, Nikon’s market share for 35mm camera bodies increased significantly in 2003
I think he was a little stingy with his D2X predictions. ;-)

I was actually expecting more Canon DSLRs this year - guess I got my hopes up too high. The thought of five different models by next year’s end is exciting, though. :D
Also, the one-minute digital printing model is a great idea. There was something similar on The Amazing Race in one or two episodes where the contestants had to take a certain photo, then have it developed in a digital printing center. That generally took only a minute or two (depending on the intelligence of the team).

One of my lists is having this sort of discussion. Everyone loves digital images, being able to print etc but shows require slides. Then came news that Kodak was going to discontinue slide projector production. Even I, on the brink of considering getting a new 35mm camera for just this show-entering purpose, was left wondering what to do. Will the art community continue demanding slides? Will the cost of everything film related start increasing if there is less demand and as a result less production? There are people already doing the “digital shot ” move but there is skepticism about the result and why this step should be necessary. stay tuned!
