Demolition Close to Home

It’s a good news/bad news sort of day. The bad news is that yet another house is being demolished nearby. The really bad news is that it’s very nearby — directly across the street … in front of the window where I work.
Before the smashing begins, the victim is enclosed in scaffolding hung with tarpaulins. This is a kind of formality meant to minimise dust and debris from affecting adjacent properties, but it’s really just that: a formality. Here’s what it sounds like:

Our landlord is being tight-lipped about what’s happening to the block, but I’m willing to bet money that something ugly gets built — not because they have no taste but because that’s what the economics will dictate.
So, first we will have the demolition and then we will have an even longer period of … noisy construction. Happy goddamned New Year.

Having just lived through the construction of a new house directly across the street, I totally know what you’re going through. At least in my case the house looked nice when it was finished. If I had to live through all of that construction only to see an ugly result, I’d be very frustrated. Good thing you’re renting.

I really feel for you. Don’t need to hear it as I can well imagine the disturbance. My usual criterium of anguish is “Does it hurt”, and of course, in this case, it does. It is almost a physical pain. Four months’ worth? It will pass, eventually. Earplugs.
