2003.12.31 (Wed)
… New Year, everyone. All the best for 2004 — I hope it’s better than this year was in all the ways that count. Peace, happiness, wisdom, and a little bit of money to us all.

Tokyo’s Artelligence Quotient Skyrockets
16:55 | Comments (0)
I would have thought that one of the first things you’d need to do if you wanted people to start taking you seriously again would be to stop coining words like “artelligent.”
Thoroughly Ripped Off
16:55 | Comments (25)
I’ve been ripped off before, but perhaps not quite this thoroughly (albeit ineptly).

Come In, Beagle 2
16:55 | Comments (2)
It seems we’ve had more bad luck than good with Mars over the years.
2003.12.24 (Wed)
…Christmas, everyone, whatever your religious persuasion. Hope you get to have a warm and happy time with family.

A Nicely Lit Tokyo Station
16:55 | Comments (9)
This is a classic view of Tokyo Station — a photograph that must exist in millions of slight variations throughout Japan and across the world.

Emperor’s Birthday
16:55 | Comments (3)
Tomorrow is the emperor’s birthday. It’s a national holiday and, by the look of it, quite a few people will be spending it queueing to get into the palace grounds.
Christmas CD Banned for Mentioning Jesus
16:55 | Comments (8)
I don’t want to seem insensitive or hostile to the notion of so-called ‘politically correct’ behaviour, but this is pretty funny.

Merry-Go-Round
16:55 | Comments (2)
There’s a pulsing vein of existential terror running through the meat of life which has as its heart … the fairground, the carnival, the sideshow attraction.
2003.12.20 (Sat)
I never noticed what a vaguely sinister shot this distant chimney can provide just after the sun goes down.

Safari Displays Titles Properly!
16:55 | Comments (19)
I downloaded the 10.3.2 update for Mac OS today and just noticed that Safari now displays title attributes in little ‘tool tips’ type text boxes just like other browsers.
Ed Devereaux Dies
16:55 | Comments (12)
Ed Devereaux may not be such a familiar name to non-Australians, but to two generations of viewers he was park ranger Matt Hammond in the television series Skippy.

A Bale of Rice
16:55 | Comments (9)
There’s something very satisfying about rice being transported in its own straw.
Demolition Close to Home
16:55 | Comments (3)
It’s a good news/bad news sort of day. The bad news is that yet another house is being demolished nearby. The really bad news is that it’s very nearby — directly across the street … in front of the window where I work.

I was having a hard time getting by without FruitMenu, but I no longer have to.

Why Food Tastes Good in Autumn
16:55 | Comments (8)
I’ve decided there has to be a reason why food and eating in general should be so pleasurable this season, and it must be because we’re being given a kind of metabolic cue — winter is coming: eat up!

A Dozen Chinese Proverbs
16:55 | Comments (4)
There are about a dozen Chinese proverbs that apply to me at the moment and I’m in flagrant violation of every one of ‘em.

December Moon
16:55 | Comments (1)
I caught an astonishing moonrise tonight from the east end of Yoyogi-Uehara station. It was as big and yellow as it gets … the last warm moon for a while. We’ve got some cold ones coming up.

Traffic Trails
16:55 | Comments (18)
A friend, whose opinions on photography are always worth listening to and arguing with, gently suggested that she would like to see more movement in my pictures. Enough with the staid formalism already, I think she wanted to say, live a little, for chrissakes. ;-)

Infinite Hotel: The Easiest Solution
16:55 | Comments (5)
Mark Pilgrim looks at the old brainteaser of the infinite hotel. He graciously provides a solution, but it involves math. If you’re like me (and I know I am), you’re already looking for an easier solution. Here it is.

A Building Made of Sky
