Steaming Fuji
Comments: 2
This news is a bit old now, but did I mention that Fuji may be about to erupt? A long period of dormancy may be coming to an end. (Quite old news, as a matter of fact — I’ve had this link hidden in my dock since October and just discovered it again. Haven’t heard any recent reports of imminent eruptions.)
Steam, tensions rise near Mt. Fuji tourist spots
Mitsusada Enyo, Asahi ShinbunDespite official reassurances, locals fear the mountain is preparing to erupt.
Steam was discovered escaping from the east-northeast slope of Mount Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture last month, but the Meteorological Agency quickly quashed rumors an eruption was imminent.
Nonetheless, this is the first time steam has been detected rising from the highest mountain in Japan since the end of World War II.
If Fuji were to erupt even a little, the mayhem would be widespread and quite something.

The Teide (third largest volcano on Earth, I recommend the visit, absolutely) has been releasing various gasses for decades and nothing’s happened as yet. I’d say you’re quite safe. Um. Maybe. ;-)

Meh.. .that’s what you get for living at the base of a volcano. Not that I’m wishing it upon anyone.
