FTTH

The broadband revolution was slow breaching the walls of this old house, but what may have been the last bastion of ISDN connectivity in the greater Tokyo metropolitan area fell yesterday when a 100Mb/sec fibre optic cable was threaded through a little hole in the wall and connected to a box with blinking lights on it.
Fibre to the home! The dream becomes reality, and so forth.
It’s quite fast.

I have been thinking about going fiber myself. I wonder if it would be significantly faster than my YahooBB connection (upload is where I’d like improvement). One question for you about fiber:
Did they give you a static IP or dynamic?

UltraBob —- dynamic, unfortunately. Usen gives you static addresses, though. NTT is giving us a month free as part of a ‘trial’ and if we want to keep using it after the month, we don’t pay the usual registration fee.
One advantage with NTT is the IP phone (although I haven’t had time to set this up yet). Usen probably does a similar service now, come to think of it. This should effectively give us another line into the house at no additional expense.

Fiber to the home? Lucky bastards, the best we can get here (western New York state) is bad cable or bad DSL. Heck, even at school our lan is only 10BaseT (10mbps). Maybe I should get a co-op in Japan.

I have it now about six month. Ordered during a campaign. Paid about 15000Yen for installation charges, but I got the money back after 3months. :-) Overall speed is about 77Mps, and there is no noticable dropdown in speed, if I access the internet with several computer at the same time. Best buy I have done lately. ;-)

That’s insane man. Would die for fibre. Broke ass student.

So are there any sites at all that allow you full use of your bandwidth? 77Mps sounds like University lines! (what’s the monthly fee anyway?)
