Big week on Doonsebury
Comments: 8
There’s a big episode happening on Doonsebury this week — one of those before-and-after events that will cast a shadow through the strip from now on. I have to say, I’ve been rivetted. Yesterday’s strip was an example of why comics can have a place among novels and film and photography and painting. If you haven’t been reading, start on Monday and read through.

Yeah, I was just thinking that it seems to tie in with Get Fuzzy this week. I wonder if any other comics are making this an issue… I think it’s important for comics to take on serious issues from time to time. Hopefully this will have an impact on the American public, who have been relatively sheltered from the effects of Iraq thus far.
(News coverage is one thing - I think many people automatically discount or even tune out things they see on TV, whether they’re true or not. To see artists tackle these stories in a non-traditional medium may actually jar the public’s attention.)

The strip on 4/21 is amazing. The first three panels lead up to the obvious punchline of seeing B.D. without his helmet (for the first time ever?) and then, WHAM! We’ve seen these character’s lives over the course of decades and come to know their personalities. I applaud Mr. Trudeau’s courage to take such a dramatic step.

Having seen both, I do begin to wonder whether the authors planned this in some way.
When I lived in the US I remember the news coverage is very biased, especially Fox … I am not sure if the American public is getting the message … I doubt that they show dead GIs, daily body count and football field cementary.

Some of the message is getting through (via the Washington Post and the Freedom of Information Act).

And today we get word that a true American hero, Pat Tillman was killed in action in Afghanistan today.
Pat Tillman gave up a career with the Arizona Cardinals NFL team and a 3.6 million dollar contract in order to serve with the US Army Rangers in Afghanistan.
No good deed ever goes unpunished, huh?

Sometimes I wonder what’s going through Trudeau’s head. This week’s strips don’t belong on a comic page. They’re almost as tasteless as the Condi Rice, “Brown Sugar” strip he did a few weeks ago.

Britney Spears comics. Abducted, cruelly tortured and brutally punishment Britney Spears BDSM art drawings. Celebrity nude britney spears comics from BDSM artist Gary Roberts!!!
[I took the links out of this comment because I judged their inclusion to be spam-ish, but the text itself, of considerable historical interest, is too good to throw away. -jh 2004.08.05]
