Smoke (no mirrors)

Smoke is hard to get in focus, especially at f2.8 (which is all this very overcast day was going to give).

Something to try when time permits: setting up a flash behind the smoke to better backlight it.

I’ve always loved photos of smoke. There’s something so ephemeral about them…

If you want to get rid of some of that annoying digital noise, you can try this very simple method in Photoshop.

  • Duplicate the layer with the image on it
  • Set the layer to “Multiply” mode
  • Fiddle with the opacity of this newly created layer
  • That’s it! It’ll darken the image a little overall, but lighter areas will remain more so than darker ones.

    Simply but beautiful.

you can’t point that pic to a smoke unless your caption declares it as smoke.

Tom —- I’d forgotten that trick: thanks for the reminder. You made me go back and redo those shots and I like them better now.

alis —- the picture with the smoke curling up in front of the face is well done. Reminds me somehow of Man Ray.

what, by the way, do you use as smoke source?

    Posted by alis   2004.05.18, 20:31

jh: oh my!! I am fully in love with Man Ray. Or at least some of his work. The Primacy of Matter over Thought is one of my favourite images ever… so thankyou for that.

In Opera 7, right-click and Open image. Then choose High contrast (W/B) from the user styles menu. A black screen background makes them even better.
