Neither wind nor fan

ga.jpg

There’s an old zen story about a monk who asks the master something like, “Does the flag move because the wind blows, or does the wind blow because the flag moves?” and the master replies, “Neither wind nor flag move. Mind moves.”

At which point of course — shazzam! — the monk becomes enlightened. If I’ve screwed up this story, dredged from memory, it only shows how far I’ve yet to go until my own personal shazzamness occurs. All I know is that I wish my mind would move cooler: it’s hot in here.

The picture above shows caligraphy on a paper folding fan. The full phrase reads “muga” — no self, or no ego.

I wish….

Beautiful photo as always.

A year or so ago, when Chinese/Japanes characters were all the rage as the art for tattoos and bumper stickers, etc…, I always thought that some company should manufacture stickers and t-shirts with characters saying something like, “I’m a douche bag” or “I’m culturally retarded” unbeknownst to the owner. They would think it was cool and hip and anyone who could read it would get a good laugh. Kinda mean but still…

That’s a gorgeous photo, and a fine example of how studying Japanese for the past four years doesn’t make me able to read, or even recognise, handwritten kanji. I thought that was a nice picture of someone sitting in a folding chair and leaning against a tree, some kind of conifer. Darn.

Great photo, although thats no change from the ordinary at your site.

Just thought I’d let you know (you probably already do know) that your comment posting forms spread beyond the “content” area of your page into your “side bar” area. Its trivial (I know, I’ve got the same problem at infopimps.org, its generally an easy fix, but ya).

Just a heads up. Love your blog.
