Turkmen leader orders ice palace
Comments: 2
A story, delightfully written, from the BBC’s Central Asia correspondent Monica Whitlock.
President Niyazov of Turkmenistan has ordered the construction of a palace made of ice in the heart of his desert country, one of the hottest on earth.
“Let us build a palace of ice,” said President Niyazov, “big and grand enough for 1,000 people.”
A small comic masterpiece, very deftly done.

I think Niyazov may have an edge on you for the title King of the World. He’s written a moral manifesto that’s required reading in Turkmenistan and he’s renamed all the months of the year—January commemorates himself and April is for his mother.

You’d better get cracking, King Antipixel. Your traffic noise proclamation doesn’t hold up…
