Hats are back

For some of us, they’ve always been ‘in,’ but it’s good to see hats are back. Now we just need the return of hat checks so we have somewhere to put them when we go out.
However influential celebrity hat-wearing may be, most in the millinery trade acknowledge a gloomier imperative. “The whole hip-hop generation has done a lot for the hat business,” Ms. O’Toole said. “But the real reason behind it all? Skin cancer.”
Not sure about $3,000 for a straw hat even though it looks very good.

Tim Bray on hats.
I sweat so much that I can’t imaging spending a lot of money on one. It wouldn’t last long with me.

Hats may be back in style, but only in the sense that you don’t look like a complete weirdo if you wear one. Admit it: you still look a little eccentric, or perhaps pretentious. Most people can’t pull it off. Except for baseball caps.

The thing about hats, especially the kind of old American film hats that James Cagney and all those bods used to wear, trilbys, I think you call them, is that when you wear one, every bugger wants to try it on, don’t they, like they had never seen one before? But then, if hats are back, they haven’t normally seen one that often. Older people tend to get all nostalgic when they see you with a hat on, remembering a time when you looked odd if you didn’t wear one. But it’s not them who want to try them on.
