Niigata Earthquake
Comments: 17
When the earthquakes began yesterday evening we were on a train heading back to Tokyo. When the first quake hit we were at a station. The train began shaking back and forth and I looked through the open doors of the carriage to see signs and light fittings on the platform swaying wildly enough that it was clear this was a large earthquake, although quite far away.
We had no idea of how big it was until we got home and turned on the television. There’s a technical term for how earthquakes like this make you feel: scared shitless.

I thought it was kinda fun, the same way electrical-storms-that-take-out-the-neighbor’s-40-foot-oak-tree are fun. Dreamt of tsunami last night. Yikes!

Hey Robin, lighten up on the old attitude. I too was part of the Niigata Earthquake, in that I experienced it directly (hey Robin, did you feel it? Were you here in Japan when it happened?) Sure, these things are potentially dangerous but to deal with anxiety you have to just shrug your shoulders, and say “What the fuck, I could have died but it doesn’t matter — who cares it was just an earthquake.” Actually, it is kind of exciting to feel an earthquake happen — I can say that from experience. That is the time when you realise the power of Nature, and you realise how small you are in the scheme of things. Check out my website — http://www.angelfire.com/id/croon/index.html

You guys are all just chickenshit! I’ve lived in Niigata (my wife is a native of the place) and earthquakes are like hot breakfasts to me! Get over it! It aint no big deal. You stupid morons are freaking over nothin…NOTHIN’!!!! get a life! If you are gonna start shittin’ ya pants over one little quake then Japanese culture will shred you like a meat mincer! Have some pride in yourself wimps!!!!!

first off malejewicz you are a moran. there hasn:t been an earthquake this big here in like 40 years. secondly, she/he was explaining not complaining. learn the difference. and thirdly some of us, like myself, live in the middle of effin: nowhere niigata (horinouchi) and would like to see what is going on since we aren:t all wonderful japanese listeners (but i:m sure you are one up on that too aren:t you malejewicz)

Actually, katy, the 1995 Hanshin earthquake was bigger — 6.9 (Chuetsu) vs 7.2 (Hanshin).
But still, you have to just accept earthquakes as a part of living in Japan — just like tornadoes and hurricanes in parts of the US or Asia. They may destroy peoples’ lives, but when they don’t you just have to move on.

I find it just amazing how fast a simlple comment on an earthquake can turn “ugly”. Can’t we just respect each others comments and opinions

Does anyone have any direct news of what has happened in Kawaguchi Ojiya or Nagaoka? How are the people coping in those areas and any news about some of the local JETs from those areas?

What the fuck! The nature is clever……….So many 90 years-old in Japan………earthquakes are the solution.

Dozens of persons died. 100,000 or more persons are living in the temporary shelter. Earthquake and Aftershock also continues now. The road collapsed and electricity and water service have failed. It rained from last evening and temperature of Niigata is made of becoming cold.

I
m living in Kaetsu now. And Ive got to say that my first reaction to the earthquake washey, neat, a quake!…then it go stronger. Thats when I got pretty scared. The poster that saidthis is the strongest quake here in 40 years` meant NIIGATA I believe, when they said here. That is indeed a true fact. In 1964, there was a 7.5For those worried about the JETs in Chuetsu, I just recieved an e-mail from Ian (our Prefectural advisor) informing us that ALL Chuetsu ALTs have been accounted for. They`re all safe.
You can be pretty certain that all the ALTs in Chuetsu (not just the JETs) are accounted for and relatively uninjured. If any foreigner was missing, dead, or in critical condition it`d be huge news. We would all know.

Malejewicz you insensitive bastard. Insignificant? The death toll stands at 36 so far.

seriously some of you have to chillax. People are just sharing there ideas etc. Although, earthquakes are a part of life in Japan this is VERY unusual. I was wondering if anyone has heard any theories about why there are so many earthquakes of late - I hear a few, but nothin’ concrete.

Another earthquake …..(yawn)….this time in Nagaoka. Everone get a fright did they? Chickenshit!!!! I always knew English teachers were a gutless breed. I am an Economist we are truly a tough breed ‘coz we have to live in the REAL WORLD!!!!! Ya hear??

Malejewicz, you are one of those guys that talks a big game online, but I bet you, you were the first one running for cover when the quakes struck….You are so fearless online, but I can guess what kind of bloke you are in real life. Those of us who live in Japan are used to quakes, but for anyone to say that the quakes which struck and continue to strike were no big deal are liars. Good thing blokes like you can flex your muscles on-line cause in the real world, where you economists live, you are just a simple, everyday wanker. Ya hear???
