The Criterion Collection

A couple of movies arrived yesterday on DVD from The Criterion Collection. I’ve been a fan of their DVDs for quite a while, but their latest releases seem to be especially well done.
I bought Tokyo Story by Ozu Yasujiro and Ikiru by Kurosawa. Both films are very handsomely packaged and each comes with an extra disc containing various Japanese documentaries on the directors subtitled in English.
It’s good to see such a great collection of films being treated so well.

I too recently purchased the Criterion Collection ‘Ikiru’ DVD and am extremely happy with the quality of the package. Spurred by my interest in both Kurosawa and the arcting arc of Takashi Shimura, where this performance seems to finish off where ‘Stray Dog’ started. Great stuff and all highly recommended.
I will have to look into ‘Tokyo Story’, as the care that Criterion takes in the transfer to digital format is very impressive. ‘Ikiru’, ‘Stray Dog’ and other classics like ‘Seven Samurai’ look like they were only released this year!

I saw Tokyo Story as part of an Ozu mini-retrospective at the Irish Film Institute last year. I wasn’t that keen on Floating Weeds, which I had seen a few weeks earlier on BBC Four, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but Tokyo Story was a wonderful surprise. I’ll have to add that DVD to my list.
By the way, if you’re on the lookout for something more contemporary, I heartily recommend Takeshi Kitano’s Kikujiro; if it doesn’t make you weep, you’ve got a heart of stone.
