Ring ring ka-ching

A few weeks ago I spent a couple of hours trying to edit some music I’d made in Garage Band into a ringtone for my mobile phone because the built-in choices are all so appalling (so bad in fact that the phone is almost permanently on silent mode — I never hear it, which is the nice thing about this state of affairs).

No matter what format I used or what I tried, I couldn’t get a new ringtone on the phone, which left me wondering why it was so hard to do.

Then not long after that I read somewhere that more than 3 billion US dollars was spent on ringtones last year … and the penny dropped.

I know there's a bunch of software out there to do this, like:

polyringtoneconverter

or do a search for midiO on versiontracker

mainly the problem is in doing the garageband to MIDI conversion. I am often answering the same question for how to get garageband music into notation programs like printmusic which are requiring MIDI format

My AU WIN phone uses a subset of the mp4 format, called 3gp2 (or .3g2). I use Windows, so to convert to that I used Audacity software to edit the clip in mp3, and Quicktime to save in mp4 format with the extension 3g2. I:ve not tried to play it yet as I can't get it into the phone (new, needs a cable or I have to get the adapter for the memory stick duo pro).

I sometimes get new rintones for my mobile phone. Though I haven't had trouble in ringtone service, the use of it cost much for me. Getting a only one ringtone cost about 1dallar.I hope the cost became more cheap.

Yes, this is a shame. I remember when my nokia 3210 and then 8210 had ringtone "editors" and you could send ringtones to other people -then both these features were removed from the 8310 and the like. Just as a wealth of companies started selling ringtones for a £1 a pop.

Go figure.
