Battlezone and Asteroids

My gaming requirements are very simple, yet unfulfilled. All I want is a version of Battlezone that runs on OS X and is as close as possible to the original. Asteroids would be nice, too, seeing as how I don’t run Classic anymore and therefore can’t play Maelstrom.

Ah Battlezone. My Aunt’s family has the arcade machine, and I spent many an hour crouched with my eyes to the periscope, and countless hours rubbing my sore lower back wishing I hadn’t.

Come to think of it, they have the Asteroids machine too. But I preferred the console version, which they also had, complete with the luxury of lounging on the floor in front of the sofa to play.

You’re in luck!

Somebody else has been missing Maelstrom too, so a MacOS X port was made: http://www.devolution.com/~slouken/Maelstrom/

And Battle zone has had a modern makeover: http://bzflag.org/

have fun

You want to install MacMAME. It is a Multi-Arcade Machine Emulator. Once you get it working, you’ll be able to play Battlezone, Asteroids, and EVERY OTHER GAME YOU CAN POSSIBLY THINK OF. I use mine to play Street Fighter II, Rastan, and Yie Ar Kung Fu. As of the latest release, MAME supports about 3,000 games, from the very earliest arcade games up to some relatively recent ones.

Locating the ROMs, which you need to make each game work, can be difficult, but some persistence with Google will pay off.

Now, where to get a set of gin-you-wine Battlezone controllers…

For a nice freeware Asteroids clone updated for Mac OS X, try Argonaut.

Does anyone have an old copy of Battlezone from Xenadyne? BZflag is fine, but I prefer the simpler retro version for a few minutes of fun every now and then.
