I got an iSight and perched it on the screen of the computer and it’s like staring into the eye of HAL. It works though, and quite well, and I can see that it might even be useful. Testing it out with a friend for the first time, I got to wave goodnight to his son who was just being put to bed. I managed to get him all fired up and giggly just like I usually do in person (he does the same for me), only now I can do it remotely. His mother must hate me.
What I want with iChat though is the ability to open up a document window and share the contents of that as well (a whiteboard would be nice). I guess I really want Apple Remote Desktop and iChat rolled into one, then you could really do some work.

Facetop technology would/will be even cooler than Remote Desktop or a whiteboard over iChat (which other IMs already do).

What about SubEthaEdit? I've used it in conjunction with an iSight?

yeah you! I love my isight. shameless self-promotion here, but I set up a little page when they first came ut that describes different softwares you can use with it:

I updated it last week to show some cool software you can use with isight to catalogue books, DVDs etc.

another vote for SubEthaEdit - first thing that came to my mind, but I was beat by a few hours :)

I really want the whiteboard. I tried Cocinella but it has a long way to come before it is worth anything I think.

Yup - SubEtherEdit is a lot of fun - used it myself in this situation. However, you might like VNC (or realVNC or any of those flavours). Either way a webcam is kind of cool. Personally I found the iSight a little expensive, and iChat a bit too AOL centric. Looking forward to the Jabber compatible version which will be out soon honest…or maybe I've read too many rumour sites.
I have to say I tried my webcam on my PC with Yahoo Messenger about 4 years ago and used it sporadically. interestingly, the Mac Yahoo Messenger has video but no audio…how stupid a feature set is that.
