‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ sets 2-day box-office record in Japan

The new film from Studio Ghibli is doing pretty well, according to Kyodo:

Famed Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated film “Howl’s Moving Castle” chalked up 1.48 billion yen in box-office revenue and attracted an audience of 1.1 million people during its first two days of release, a record for a domestic film, Toho Co. said Monday.

For its first two days, the movie surpassed the record of Miyazaki’s previous work and smash hit, “Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi” (Spirited Away) by 40 percent, the film distributor said.

Hmm. I never did like that book. I lost interest after about 40 pages. Perhaps I’m just not a fantasy type.

Spirited Away was quite a masterpiece (for its class/category).

Oh, how different Japan is from the USA…

I’m hoping Howl will be playing in the US, like Sen to Chihiro did. Otherwise I’m going to have to grab myself a bootleg.

Doesn’t Disney still have that exclusive distribution deal with Ghibli? Considering the growing mainstream interest in Miyazaki here in the States, I’d wager that the film will be released here in some form or another.

That’s true, but Disney took a very long time to publish things like Laputa, and there was absolutely no publicity in my region when Spiritied away came out. I found out about it from a flyer that had been hidden in the corner of my theater.

It would be nice to see Disney push Ghibli stuff, but then again, I’m a bit weary of what they would do if Ghibli became really popular.

The two Howl books were among my favorites, I would love to see the movie.

I’d also love to see The Dark Lord of Derkholm turned into a movie.
