The music of Kevin Volans

I’ve been listening a lot lately to music by the South African composer Kevin Volans. I first heard his music on a CD by the Kronos Quartet called “White Man Sleeps” (named after a piece they commissioned him to rework for string quartet, although that album only contains two ‘movements’ of it). A month or so ago I bought “hunting:gathering” by The Duke Quartet which includes all of White Man Sleeps as well as the title piece and Quartet No. 6. It’s some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard, stunningly well played and just as well recorded and engineered.
Another great disc is known, I think, as “This is How It Is”. It contains a selection of pieces from the mid-’90s commissioned and played by The Netherlands Wind Ensemble.

wow - very nice. I’m always pleased to follow music recommendations, since it’s a daunting task to sample music randomly. Luckily, this one is available on iTunes!
