Auld Lang Syne, mon

When stores in Japan want to announce to patrons that it’s closing time, they play “Auld Lang Syne.” In pachinko parlours, department stores, amusement parks, and countless other places, a generally syrupy instrumental version tells you that you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.

Tonight I happened to journey home at precisely the right time to hear a head shop in my neighbourhood playing a reggae version, audible on the street as I walked by. Where do you even find a reggae version of “Auld Lang Syne”? God, I love this country. It never fails to amaze me.
