Penultimate sunset

Sunset on the second last night we were in Mandurah, Western Australia. Spectacular sunsets are orders of magnitude more common there than in Tokyo, that’s for sure. This particular sunset lit up the sky for a good hour, and the clouds were various and mobile.

Very nice.

I wish I could have seen the real thing—incredible stuff. And I guess in Australia, it’s warm enough right now to linger outside and just gawk as long as the show lasts.
I thought pollution can bring on some great sunsets. Isn’t Tokyo polluted enough? The sky just fades to black these days.

Tokyo is polluted, sure, and there are some great sunsets. However, none of that matters if you can’t see it. Looking at the horizon your view will be blocked by ginormous towers of gray.
Here is a shot I took on my cellphone in Nerima-ku, Tokyo: http://www.radiohorse.com/blog/images/41.jpg

Beautiful. Amazing colours – I woke up recently to an incredible pink sunrise over London. It was in the Christmas holiday season so the roads were still quieter than usual. Flocks of birds, bathed in pink light, were flying down the streets as I cycled to work at 7.30am. A fantastic experience, but I was only able to capture the sunset on camera:

That’s one thing I remember most about Western Australia - the skies. They would go on for miles, in the most spectacular colors.
Thank you for sharing your very gorgeous pic.

I’ll be home in Perth from tomorrow. I intend to spend many an evening watching perfect sunsets over the ocean. Melbourne has crap sunsets.

A breathtaking sky; thanks for sharing your view of the beauty.

That sunset is amazing! I also love the way you framed it with the tree branches. Would you be able to make it available as a wallpaper-sized image?
And thank you for using penultimate correctly! I can’t count how many times I’ve heard/read it used incorrectly. I don’t know why some people use words that they don’t understand. (end rant)

We all expect another raging sunset like this tonight (17/1/05) in Perth as some blinkin’ idiot lit six bush fires about 30 miles east of the city yesterday. The temp today is topping 40c (105 F -plus) and the smoke plume last night reached 220 kilometres out to sea. Yeah, pollution, but not petrochemical …

When I first opened this last week and it was at the top of your page, I nearly cried… I just assumed that it was Tokyo or at least Japan. I was so relieved to then read it was Australia… my “home”sickness subsided somewhat. Beautiful though.
