To be less stupid

“This is a rant,” wrote Simon Willison a few days ago, “for which I will make no apologies.” I’d like to humbly assure him that absolutely no apology is needed.
The wonderful thing about web applications is that they free you from being tied down to a specific platform. A well written web application is accessible from any platform that can run a web browser.
Writing internal web applications that only work in Internet Explorer in this day and age is short-sighted and inexcusable.
Well, right on! If I want to look at my work e-mail from home, I have to use IE (it’s the only time I ever have it running). What’s more, because I use a Macintosh, I get bumped down to an older, scrawnier version of the web interface. If I’m checking work e-mail from home, I’m working for free. If you have employees who are willing to work for free, the least you could do is make it pleasant. But I digress.
Later that day I read this from Tim Bray, a nicely succinct summary of a key point from a Searls/Weinberger piece of a couple of years back:
The Internet and the Web aren’t things and they’re not places, they’re a mesh of agreements that allow us to talk to each other and to be less stupid.
Double-plus-right-on. (And congratulations, by the way, on RFC3986.)
