Saw this on Wirefarm just now. Shit.
Author Hunter S. Thompson Kills Himself
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of journalism in books like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67.

I woke up this morning and a friend in Britain emailed me with this news. Completely threw off my entire day. I've been sitting at work for a couple hours and haven't had the motivation to do anything.
Ironic that we all learn the news on Presidents' Day…

Jeremy, there's a typo in your post – the title says he died at age 65. The body paragraph is correct though.

This morning I had my alarm set to NPR radio to wake me up. The announcement came while I was dozing, and I thought for sure I was dreaming. It wasn't until I got to work that my friend reminded me that it was real … Very sad indeed.

Most will remember Thompson for the excesses, the dark corners of the physche, 50lb guard peacocks and the lifetime NRA membership. I like to remember the explosive prose which sparkled like an opal seam in the desert sandstone. But really, I was always disappointed that his intellect and writing ability could be easily criticised as self indulgence. This may prevent many accepting his work ('Hell's Angels' is much better than 'Las Vegas…') into the American Canon where, to be fair, some of the 'ol Kentucky hill boy's work should rightfully lie. Still, he must of been a right bastard at times to get on with. ( PS. I'm going to scream when I hear the first Hemmingway comparison by a commentator.)

Yes, the Good Doctor Thompson left this world with a bang, but he will not be soon forgotten.
I knew him for years. I've compiled some first hand memories for your and your readers:-
