aoyamaBochi_20050223_01.jpg

Spent the morning and early afternoon photographing the foreign section of Aoyama Bochi* with the friends who are trying to sensibly preserve it. We’re looking to form a trust or foundation (announcement coming soon) with a well- and independently-managed financial component where we fill some coffers now and set something ticking into the future whereby the necessary fees can be paid for generations to come. We’re meeting with a lawyer next week who’s very nicely agreed to give us some time to talk about the best way to do this.

The photographs we took today will be somehow linked to the map we have of the foreign section, and we’ll be posting those along with whatever information we’re able to find on the people who inhabit that map as soon as we decide the best way to catalogue and display everything.

* It’s really Aoyama Reien (青山霊園) but everyobody says Aoyama Bochi (青山墓地).

You are working for a good cause. It’s sad to see respectful spots for good people almost thrown away. Best of luck to you and your friends.

but they agreed to save them? http://www.furl.net/item.jsp?id=2017952

Anyway, I guess saving is not enough, actually “taking care” of them will be a good thing. Good luck.

The line that tells the real story in that article:

“As a result, the government decided in principle to preserve them after evaluating their historical value.”

I think this means they will preserve those they deem to be important.
