The African Cliff

Alex Tabarrok has posted an absolutely shocking graph at Marginal Revolution showing reduced life expectancy in 5 African countries due to AIDS. This is just astonishing, in the worst possible way.

If you’ve ever been there, you wouldn’t be that shocked. The Aids crisis is merely one facet of a greater malady in southern Africa. This is a part of the world, remember, where Robert Mugabe can claim he is saving his countrymen from ‘British oppression’ while simultaneously starving them of life’s basics; where his followers can get away with murder while, next door, Thabo Mbeke’s South Africa sits idly by, afraid to cause a fuss (what he calls ‘quiet diplomacy’).

I guess the question that comes to my mind is: What is Uganda doing right? They seem to have reversed their trend.
